After the reviewing and ranking process, proposals were presented to and approved by the Alabama Board of Directors. The Board of Directors elected to approve an additional $37,000 for conservation and hunting heritage-related projects out of the NWTF Alabama License Plate Fund. Projects include outreach-education events, chapter scholarships and 4H Shooting Sports support.

"NWTF staff and our conservation partners are thankful for the talented volunteers who generate these funds which are available to continue our mission in Alabama," said Derek Alkire, NWTF district biologist for Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee. "The projects that are funded for 2023 will greatly impact the wild turkey across the state."

NWTF conservation project award funding will be matched with $786,712.32 in partner or grant funds for the approved projects, representing a 7:1 match rate for NWTF project funding in Alabama.

These projects will conserve over 125,000 acres of vital habitat in Alabama. Projects include:

  • Over $28,000 for wild turkey research
  • Nearly $30,000 to deliver work on private lands via NWTF seed programs
  • $23,000 towards equipment purchases that will be used to impact thousands of acres year over year
  • $45,000 towards scholarships, JAKES Days and other outreach activities across the state
